If the point of life is to find your own flavor of being happy, then why is it so dang hard sometimes?!
I doesn’t have to be!
Here is a post to help you flip your attitude and up your happiness levels in 5 minutes flat! Yay for life hacks!
Minute #1: Insert Shiny, New Photo into Your Hard Drive
“Huh? What hard drive are you talking about, Terran?” I’m referring to your brain.
So let’s imagine you’re standing in the line at the grocery store and you are seriously annoyed with the situation. Kids are running around you yelling loudly, there are 5 people ahead of you in line, you had somewhere to be like 5 minutes ago. Get the picture? Basically you are standing in line and not a happy camper. What to do?
For starters, pull your attention from what is displeasing you and plant it on something that pleases you.
So here’s my suggestion, since the brain uses pictures to communicate, you’ll want to give it a fun, pleasing “photo” (or mental image) to focus on. What makes you happy? Cute puppies…that delicious meal you enjoyed last week…the way your cat purrs when you pet it…thoughts about fun plans for the weekend…the way your significant other smiles at you…that funny joke you read online earlier today…
Find something in that amazing mind of yours to use as a pick me up.
Forget the current situation and consciously put your focus on your shiny, new happy image.
Minute #2: Focus on Breathing Deeply
Breath plays a key role in your level of calm and relaxation. This translates into your feelings of well-being which trickle down to your happiness. Don’t ask me how but somehow all this is tied together. A stressed body cannot relax and therefore the operator (I mean you) suffers the consequences.
Do yourself a favor and relax! Deep breathing is the easiest way to short-circuit stress in the body.

Conscious breathing will relax you when you need it most (and don’t have time to tap!).
Also focusing on dropping or relaxing your shoulders, as this tells your body to feel at ease too.
Minute #3: Treat Yourself
Give yourself a treat.
We all know how receiving sweet gifts from others can give us the warm fuzzies. Why not use that trick to your advantage?
Whether it’s a chair massage, a chocolate bar, a new book, a bouquet of baby’s breath or a soak in the tub (think lots of bubbles!) giving yourself a gift will change your mood instantly.
Minute #4: Will Ya Laugh, Already?!
I don’t care what silliness you have to conjure up in your head or how many “Yo’ Mama…” joke sites you have to sift through.
Find a way to laugh your butt off!
It will rock your world.
In the short-term, find humor in your immediate surroundings. Is there a funny scenario going down around you? A funny YouTube video you can watch on your phone? A meme you can pull up? Hint: start a group chat and ask your friends for the latest funnies via text!
In the long-term, make a conscious effort to surround yourself by the most hilarious, lighthearted folks you can find. Try reading comical books and watching funny movies. Subscribe to humor blogs and comics. There are so many ways to lighten up:-)
Minute #5: Think Happy Thoughts
No, no, no, this isn’t the typical advice you’d expect. Fear not! I’m not telling you to “just think happy, positive thoughts and then you will magically be happy”.
Instead I want you play with the word “happy” instead. When I say play, I mean focus on the word, repeat it, seek out examples of what it means to you, explore the idea of being happy.
Sorry if I lost you…I’m trying to form a clear picture for you of what makes perfect sense in my mind:-)
- What I want you to do is bring your focus onto the word happy. What does the energy behind this word feel like? Focus on that.
- Where can you find examples of what happy means to you in everyday life? Is it when you see a sweet older couple holding hands while crossing the street? Is it when you watch kids laughing and playing at the park? Seek these examples out and surround yourself with them until you’re inundated.
- How many times can you use the words happy, happiness, ecstatic, fun, excited, cheery, merry, joyful, gleeful, carefree, delighted, smiling, beaming, grinning, in good spirits, in a good mood, lighthearted, pleased, contented, content, satisfied, radiant, beatific; thrilled, and elated in your vocabulary throughout your day.
So when you’re in a bad mood focus on the word happy…literally conjure a vision of the letters: H-A-P-P-Y in your mind.
Then your mind will start kicking up happy-related files (again with the hard drive analogy!), memories and examples. This will serve to shift your mood in no time!
